Course Details

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to issue work permits. Participants will learn the understanding of the permit system and the limitations of each permit, and making decisions regarding the need for and correct use of each permit.

This course applies to personnel who are required to issue permits to persons conducting a variety of activities in workplace environments in which hazards exist or specific procedures need to be followed and monitored to protect the safety of personnel and the integrity of plant or process. This includes confined space, heights, hot work, and other work permits.

 

Learning Outcomes

The course covers the following:

  • Legislative, organisational/site requirements and procedures regarding permits
  • Roles and responsibilities under the permit system
  • Reviewing the scope of work and identifying the need for a work permit
  • Permit selection
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Isolation procedures
  • Determining the appropriate conditions for the permit
  • Raising, authorising, and issuing the necessary permit
  • Monitoring compliance with permit conditions
  • Reporting any discretions or violations of permit conditions as required
  • Managing the permit process e.g., extensions, handovers, changes etc.
  • Procedures for signing off and closing out the work permit

 

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

  • Provide photo I.D on entry

  • Unless exempt, provide a verifiable USI number

  • Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks

  • Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations

  • Be able to interact with others and work under pressure

  • Dress appropriately i.e., long sleeve, long pants or overalls, safety boots/closed in shoes, safety glasses
