UNSW is home to one of the largest and most innovative Japanese programs in Australia. Our teaching staff have been awarded the prestigious Citation Award by the Australian Federal Government for being some of the “most inspiring” teachers in Australia.
We offer Japanese language courses from introductory to a professional level, as well as advanced professional courses with themes ranging from manga and literature to business Japanese and courses on Japanese history and culture.
You'll also have the opportunity to go on academic exchange at one of our 21 exchange partner universities in Japan, including the prestigious University of Tokyo and University of Kyoto, as well as leading private universities, Waseda and Keio.

This course is for those with no prior knowledge of the language.
Learn Japanese for everyday situations. We offer Japanese classes that are interactive, communicative and affordable. Step into one of IML’s online or on-campus classes, where you will learn from a qualified Japanese tutor and meet like-minded language students.
You’ll be able to learn not only from your teacher, but also from your classmates. The General course will suit most students needs, and we also offer JLPT course and Focus on Communication course for those who wish to focus on those specific areas.
On top of this, learning Japanese is great if you’re trying to get in touch with your heritage, and you want to communicate better with relatives that live in Japan, so if this is your case, don’t hesitate to start a language course this year.
This course is designed by Junko for absolute beginners who want to learn the necessary travel phrases, how to pronounce place names, order meals, shop and how to get around. Full of fun activities that focus on speaking and listening skills.
