You’ll hone your skills at Fanshawe’s Broadcast Centre—Canada’s first-ever CRTC-licensed college radio station and the country’s premier broadcasting educational tool.
You’ll also get hands-on experience as a content producer for 106.9K The X, creating stories and videos and connecting professionally through social media @XFMNews.
Graduate ready for a career in private and public broadcasting including radio and television news gathering services as Newscasters, On-Air Reporters, News Editors, News Writers, Sportscasters, Researchers, Current Affairs Producers and News Directors. Graduates also find employment with news gathering businesses.
For students interested in studying further, Western University and Fanshawe College have developed an articulation agreement, which gives you the opportunity to obtain an honours degree in Bachelor of Arts with a major in Media, Information and Technoculture (MIT), as well as a diploma in Journalism - Broadcast.
Students may start at Fanshawe, transferring into the third year of the MIT program, and complete both credentials in only four years.
Program Overview:
Journalism - Broadcast students learn skills to develop a career as a Broadcast Journalist in electronic media, radio, television and webmedia.
Develop storytelling skills as a reporter using broadcast news gathering equipment, audio and visual, news writing, newscasting, news editing, interviewing, researching, documentary/current affairs production, sportscasting, news beats, news management, media law and media ethics.
Students should be prepared to learn during additional hours in the X-FM Newsroom and travel in the community gathering news stories. As well, students will be assigned to work on the Radio Fanshawe Inc. broadcast properties during holidays and weekends on a rotational basis.
Note that we recommend students purchase a laptop computer for the program, once the College publishes the recommended configuration, models, software titles and version for the academic year.
Additionally, a CONNECT lab fee is included in the Additional Program Fees stated in the Fee Schedule. This fee helps to cover the costs associated with the CONNECT mobile computing program, in which members are given access to Newsroom Remote software and various Microsoft programs.
