We’re not only dedicated to the conservation of our textile machines, but also to the preservation of the skills required to operate them. We offer several ways of helping you acquire these traditional skills.
We’re not only dedicated to the conservation of our textile machines, but also to the preservation of the skills required to operate them. We offer several ways of helping you acquire these traditional skills. These include:
One to one training sessions
Workshops and special events
Volunteer ‘maker’ training
Volunteer ‘demonstrator’ training
These sessions are aimed at people who volunteer at the museum. You can choose to be trained on our knitting frames or on our circular sock-knitting machines (Griswolds).
Circular Knitting Tuition
If you own your own circular sock-knitting machine and would like to learn how to use it, or improve your skills, we can help.
You can book a one-to-one training workshop with one of our expert volunteers - please contact us for details and availability.
Anyone can book one of these sessions; you don’t have to be a museum volunteer.
Craft Workshops
From time to time, the museum organises craft workshops that take place in the Chapel Art Gallery.
Typical themes might include jewellery-making, paper crafts and felt flower-making. Whilst these sessions are generally aimed at adults, we also run a programme of craft activities for children.
These include stocking-making at Christmas-time and our school holiday Griswold Gang sessions, run in partnership with Ruddington Fun.
Some of our workshops are run by museum staff and volunteers, and others by third parties. A cost normally applies and you may need to book your place in advance.
The Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington is a unique surviving example of a 19th century framework knitters’ yard.
Our site has been lovingly restored as a living history museum.
You’ll discover how framework knitters and their families lived and worked here in Victorian times – the sights, the sounds and even the smells!
We tell the 400 year history of framework knitting, from its role in the Industrial Revolution to the infamous Luddite riots of the 1800s, and how framework knitting gave birth to the Nottingham lace industry.
Proud To Be A Working Museum
We’re a working museum, so you can see original knitting frames in action in our preserved frame shop. You can even knit your own souvenir on a vintage Griswold knitting machine.
You can also explore our fascinating collections of hosiery and related items, including a genuine pair of Queen Victoria’s stockings.
Fun For All Ages
Whether you’re visiting with family, friends or school, there are activities and events for all ages at the Framework Knitters Museum. There’s always something new to see and do – browse our ‘What’s On‘ section to find out more. We look forward to welcoming you!
Utilizing your knit, purl, and cast-on skills, you’ll be able to learn how to make these snuggly socks (although in class you will make a scaled-down version) learn how to knit the gusset, shape the heel and toe, and finally cast-off with Kitchener stitch.
Knitting classes are offered by White Gecko Craft Lounge for all skill level. Our classes include everything from introduction to crochet to felting, teddy bear making to quilting for advanced sewers and more.
I believe that knitting can be fun and relaxing and my workshops are informal in style with lots of laughter and conversation. My teaching style is based on encouragement. I firmly believe that everyone can be creative in some way and I enjoy helping people discover this.
This one day workshop is for those who want to learn the art of knitting. Whether for babies, children, adults or the home, this is a good place to start.
Our crochet and knitting classes are designed to ease you into the craft and give you the basic skills necessary to go home and try your own projects!
