Students learn Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and fundamentals of grammar, basic vocabulary, and correct pronunciation. The goal is to be able to successfully handle a variety of basic communicative tasks necessary for survival in a Korean speaking context.
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:

The School of Modern Languages’ Korean program was launched in Fall 2002, and now offers a minor program, provides first through fourth-year level language instructions, serves more than 300 students annually, and is on track to become one of the largest Korean programs in the Southeast.
Korean is spoken in South and North Korea by about 70 million people. There are about 3 million Koreans in China and Japan and smaller numbers in Russian and the ex Soviet States of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as well as in the United States.
One of the premier language learning programs in the region, the Language Academy is part of Continuing Education at Seattle Central College.
All courses are designed to develop or improve the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition, the program provides students with Korean cultural components by viewing authentic Korean audio-visual materials, creating and presenting their own skits.
The Korean language is easy to learn—it was specifically designed that way! There is a fascinating cultural history behind the creation of Hangul.
