Founded in 1960, the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) has long advocated for the welfare and protection of the rights and interests of over half a million diasporic Koreans living in the Greater New York area. A non-profit organization, KAAGNY has served to connect Korean Americans to one another as well as to the American mainstream.
It also acts as an umbrella organization to 500 other Korean American organizations which provide Korean Americans of all ages and economic backgrounds with assistance and services in numerous areas, including education, culture, vocational help, and community outreach. KAAGNY continues to exchange ideas and establish synergistic relationships with other regional and ethnic organizations through various community activities.
As reflected in KAAGNY’s mission statement, KAAGNY also attempts to foster a strong sense of Korean American identity and consciousness for future generations, and nurtures the untapped potential of individual Korean Americans to promote the development of an ever-growing and productive immigrant community in the United States.
The KAAGNY building, located in Chelsea, Manhattan, is home to KAAGNY’s main office. The building was acquired in 1983 through the generous contributions from the Korean American community during the term of the 17th KAAGNY President Ikjo Kang.
