The Stage 5 Year 9 and 10 courses in Latin are based on the Oxford Latin Course, a course particularly suited for Distance Education. Students study 32 modules of work for Year 9 and 32 modules of work in Year 10 to be completed on a weekly basis.
In Year 9, Students will access the course via the NSW School of Languages e-learning site Canvas. Year 10 will access the course via Canvas from 2020. Students study intensively both the language and the culture of Roman Civilization.
Students will have a regular weekly speaking lesson with their teacher to practise their pronunciation and to seek further assistance and support from their teacher. Work is submitted via a Google Doc issued by the teacher.
The same Google Doc is also used by the Latin teacher as a virtual whiteboard when conducting lessons in real-time.
Note: A face to face lesson day is scheduled once a term onsite at NSL in Petersham. Relevant information is distributed to students and their home schools ahead of the lesson day.
Latin Continuers
The Stage 6 Latin Continuers course is a course produced for Distance Education by NSW School of Languages. The Preliminary course consists of 24 modules of work and the HSC course consists of 32 modules of work.
It is delivered online via the Canvas learning platform. Students complete the coursework in the modules on a weekly basis which include excerpts from the prescribed texts, one of poetry and one of prose.
Prescribed text Study Assignments accompanies each of the prescribed texts to develop students' skills in translation and interpretation.
Students complement their online written work with a weekly speaking lesson in which they practise their pronunciation as well as receive immediate feedback and support in their learning from their teacher.
The online course is complemented by a face to face lesson day once every term. Students attend NSL to meet each other and their teacher and to learn together via a range of specially designed learning activities.

The use of the telephone and video conferencing ensure that students have close connections with their teachers, despite the fact that they are not in the same physical space. Our students are drawn from over 460 schools across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and other rural regions across New South Wales.
The school also offers Stage 6 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) to students in regional government secondary schools. In the 2020 Higher School Certificate (HSC), 69% of our students achieved results above the state mean and NSW School of Languages students achieved First in State in 11 courses. Fifty-five students were placed in High Achievers List, earning marks placing them in top 5 in the state.
Of the 820 HSC students, 65% of students achieved a mark in the top two bands. Of the students studying an Extension course, 96% of students achieved in the top 2 bands.
The school has written new courses in Canvas for Year 9, 10, Year 11 and 12 Beginners and Extension students. These courses represent the latest pedagogy in online learning. Teachers will continue participating in professional learning on language pedagogy, assessment, and working with students with special needs.
Teachers at NSW School of Languages are experts in their language. More than half of the staff assist the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to mark the HSC each year with a significant number involved in the setting or assessment of the examinations.
Our teachers present their research and expertise in languages and e-learning to international, state and local conferences. We hope that you enjoy your association with NSW School of Languages.
Learning Latin is pleasurable and useful. As the direct antecedent of romance languages such as French and Spanish, Latin is especially useful to anyone studying – or who already knows – a European language.
This course is aimed at those with a good grasp of the basics - noun declensions and verb conjugations, who wish to progress towards the Latin Workshop group with its collaborative style of learning. Texts used: Intermediate Latin Grammar, by Giles & Pfitzner (available as a PDF), Cambridge Latin.
Learn Latin for everyday situations. We offer Latin classes that are interactive, communicative and affordable. Step into one of IML’s online or on-campus classes, where you will learn from a qualified Latin tutor and meet like-minded language students.
An understanding of Latin and its literature is important for an appreciation of European culture. In this beginners’ course, students learn to read Latin and find their way into the history and culture of Ancient Rome.
The course is for any student wishing to learn the language for the purposes of reading and understanding the literature of an ancient culture.
