IML Japanese language lessons are delivered live via the Zoom video conferencing software or on the UQ St Lucia campus. There are no entry requirements - simply enrol online to begin your language journey!
IML Japanese courses for Beginners
If you are new to Japanese study, you can choose from one of the following options, depending on your availability and learning objectives. Survival and Short Courses focus on speaking and listening skills.
The Scripts course aims to have students able to recognise and read the two basic Japanese alphabets - hiragana and katakana. Level 1A+B offers more in-depth study of Japanese, including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and will prepare you for a Level 2A+B course.
Established in 1934, Institute of Modern Languages was set up by The University of Queensland Senate to give more adults the chance to deepen their lives by inviting the community into the University through language learning.
UQ IML facilitates language learning and cross-cultural communication, especially useful in today's multicultural society. IML also provides the opportunity for past UQ students - alumni to remain connected with their university in a meaningful way over the many years in which they are no longer engaged in formal study.
This task is aided by accredited and dedicated language tutors, teaching in over 30 languages.

Whether you want to travel the world, learn to speak a language, follow new interests or maintain your language skills, IML gives you that opportunity in over 80 courses in 30 languages in a practical and supportive learning environment for adults.
We use a communicative approach to teaching and learning. All four skill areas are covered. Learn to speak, listen, read and write for applications in authentic situations where a collaborative team effort is encouraged in class.
Cultural segments are integrated with the language acquisition program focusing on general background studies pertaining to the countries and peoples where the targeted language is in use.
Why You Should Choose IML
IML courses in 30 languages are taught by qualified, enthusiastic language tutors who are either native speakers or have native proficiency. You don’t need to enrol in a degree to study at IML.
Our classes are open to the general public, have no pre-requisite or placement tests and are some of the most affordable in Brisbane. The cost of most IML courses is roughly $12 per hour.
Most classes are currently held online via Zoom video conferencing software, however we currently have some courses being taught at The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, where you can take advantage of the extensive campus facilities, transport options, and modern classrooms.
Lessons vary depending on the type of course, with courses offering between 2 and 6 contact hours per week.

. It equips students with the skills to communicate and negotiate with people of different cultural backgrounds.
This course is designed for students who wish to study Japanese in Years 9 and 10 as an elective subject. Students with no knowledge, some prior knowledge or background knowledge of Japanese are eligible to study this course. The course is delivered online through Canvas and contains.
This major in Japanese, which is open to beginners and those with some knowledge of the language, consists of three years of interactive Japanese language study on the Perth campus, with a choice of including (upon successful application) one or more semesters at a Japanese partner institution.
At the end of your course you will receive a Certificate of Completion, detailing what you studied, for how many hours, and your final level. While our courses are not accredited by any university or similar institution, we can dedicate a portion of your course to exam prep.
This course is suitable for complete beginners and participants who are in the beginner level and is delivered by a native Japanese speaker. In this course, we will focus on basic skills. Such as the pronunciation, basic grammar and basic vocabulary, in understanding and communicating in Japanese.
