We also have a number of commercial operators offering sailing courses. For more experienced sailors, some clubs and class associations run coaching courses to help improve your racing skills.
We promote Canterbury yachting and represent the interests of all the yacht clubs and class associations in the area. Clubs run all sorts of activities from learn to sail courses, racing, coaching, regattas, cruising and social activities. Some clubs cater just for dinghies or smaller trailer yachts, and power boats, and others include all of those and larger keel boats as well.
The city of Christchurch is perfectly located for sailing. Based on the East Coast of the South Island, with a large river in the North, an estuary close to the centre of town, the beautiful harbour and Port of Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula which is a great place for cruising.
The prevailing Easterly sea breeze provides the clubs with an almost guaranteed wind source on summer days.
The course will cover a range of subjects, including: water safety, names of boat parts, setting up boats, capsizing, launching and retrieving, tacking, gybing, points of sail, basic knots, rules and meanings.Â
The IYT Try Sailing Course is a 5 hour course aimed to provide candidates with basic introductory knowledge for crewing a vessel (monohull or catamaran) up to 15 meters in inland or coastal waters <5 miles offshore during daylight hours in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Our Adult Learn to Sail courses comprise 6 three hour sessions over a 6 week period where you will learn the basics of sailing in a two person dinghy. The courses are led by a Yachting New Zealand qualified coach under a YNZ curriculum.
Learn to Sail course is offered by Otago Yacht Club Inc. LTS is for all ages and abilities. What should sailors bring? Sailors need suitable sailing clothing for the cold Dunedin harbour (wetsuit, booties/water shoes), a towel, and a warm change of clothes.
A chance to give sailing a try or have another go without committing to a course. Supervised fun and some help to get you started. Casual sailing sessions are all about having a good time and maybe deciding to take a course.
