Sailors need suitable sailing clothing for the cold Dunedin harbour (wetsuit, booties/water shoes), a towel, and a warm change of clothes. The yacht club will supply the boats, helmets, and buoyancy aids, but if you have your own you are most welcome to bring them along.
The Otago Yacht Club is one of the leading yacht clubs in Otago with its origin dating back to 1869, making it also one of the oldest yacht clubs in the region.
During the season we run regular racing including ocean, coastal and harbour events which cater for keelboats, trailer yachts and centreboard dinghies. Refer to our Sailing Programme page for current season events. We operate a busy slipway and maintenance yard catering for boats up to 12 tonnes.
The clubrooms have just been refurbished and cater for a variety of private functions and for local organisations to hold meetings and events. Please contact us if you wish to make a booking for your function. On Sunday mornings throughout the season we run a Sailing School program which caters for those aged 8 up to adult level. Read more
Visiting sailors are made welcome and often participate in club activities both on and off the water. Our trailer park caters for up to 40 boats with the pile moorings hosting another 25 boats. New members are always welcome. Membership applications are available on the Documents page above.
Rotorua Yacht Club follows the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail syllabus. Our children's programme begins in simple, robust Optimist boats, provided by Rotorua Yacht Club. Parents are under no obligation to buy a boat before starting the course.
The Learn to Sail Keelboats is a hands on course that introduces people to sailing on keelboats. No experience is necessary. We will teach you all of the principles needed for your journey to become a great sailor.
We have had a number of adults who have learnt to sail with us in recent times - some going on to compete successfully at a high level. Whatever your interest, we look to tailor individual lessons to suit the sailor and these are taught by our club Secretary
Always wanted to learn how to sail but don't know where to start? Many clubs offer their own in-house learn to sail courses for children and adults and some have yachts that you can borrow as well.
Our Adult Learn to Sail courses comprise 6 three hour sessions over a 6 week period where you will learn the basics of sailing in a two person dinghy. The courses are led by a Yachting New Zealand qualified coach under a YNZ curriculum.
