If the weather is bad we’ll be learning how to tie knots, and we’ll go over things like tides, wind, and boat setup. The idea is to have fun and gain confidence.
The Point Chevalier Sailing Club was established in 1919 when a group of enthusiasts acquired a piece of land in the area of Joan St and Harbour View Road. In 1922-23 the club tendered for the defunct Isolation Hospital building and used the timber for the first clubhouse which was opened in 1923. The club become an incorporated society in that same year. Access to the water was an ongoing challenge due to the terrain and no roadway.
Learn to sail, or progress your skills with Nelson Yacht Club’s Sailing School this summer! Our awesome team will introduce you to the sport of sailing in a fun and supportive learning environment. Courses and training are based on guidelines set out by Yachting New Zealand.
Our Junior Learn to Sail courses make use of Optimist dinghies and are designed for 7 - 12 year-olds. With an initial focus on confidence and boat handling, as the sailor’s confidence and skills grow, the class offers opportunities for fleet racing where they can acquire racing skills!
Charteris Bay Yacht Club runs a learn to sail programme for adults and older teenagers. The course is tailored for complete novices or those who are rusty and needing a refresher course.
If you or someone you know would like to learn to sail, we may be just what you are looking for. All instructors are Yachting New Zealand qualified and place an equal importance on the safety of the student and enjoyment of the course to create a positive environment in which to learn.
LTS Adult Dinghy is a five or 10 session course over five weeks for those aged 16 and above, designed to teach you the basics of dinghy sailing. There will be lots of fun and plenty of adventures including both group and individual sailing.
