The Quebec Adapted Sailing Association wishes to allow people with physical and/or sensory disabilities, even very severe ones, to improve their quality of life and their inclusion in the community through the practice of sailing.
AQVA's activities are oriented to alleviate the difficulties experienced on a daily basis by people with physical and/or sensory disabilities.Too often, these people are confronted with people who want to do things "for them" and not "with them".
The result for some is a tendency to be passive, to ask rather than to seek to obtain by themselves. Our goal is to give them the means and resources to take charge and eventually practice sailing independently.
We believe that succeeding in sailing, a true symbol of freedom and autonomy, has positive effects on the whole personal and social life of these people.
AQVA is a non-profit organization with a board of directors in which people with disabilities are well represented. We are a community-based organization that can count on the support of many collaborative and enthusiastic volunteers.
Our Adult & Family Keelboating Program is intended to introduce people to the sport of sailing by learning the basics and getting on the water in a fun and accessible format.
At the end of the course instructors will recommend the next best course for that sailor and sailors will make progress towards their CANSail levels.
This levels provides skills necessary to graduate and join the CANSail 3 and 4 levels.
Youth take the helm, learn to chart a course, haul lines, climb aloft to furl sails, and complete activities around the galley and ship maintenance.Â
