Course Details

Water systems in residential or commercial premises can be a source of harmful bacteria called Legionella. In this course you will learn what legionella is, why it is important to control it and what you can do as a duty holder (building manager, owner or landlord) to identify and reduce the risks associated with this pathogen. You will study the legislation that you must be familiar with, the risk assessment process and how to implement legionella control systems to make sure that your premises are safe.

 

Course Content:

Legionella: An Introduction – This introductory module will set the groundwork for the rest of the course. It will introduce you legionella so you know what it is, the dangers it can present, the symptoms and who is most at risk of Legionnaires disease.

Legal Responsibilities – In the second module of this course you will become familiar with the legislation around health and safety that is applicable to the control of legionella such as COSHH, RIDOOR and Notification Regulations.

Hazardous Environment – Within this module you will learn the sources of legionella, how to identify a water system and the importance of being able to assess the risk. You will also be able to make the differentiation between a high risk and a low risk environment and identify some of the different systems that may present a risk from a legionella perspective.

Risk Assessment – Conducting a risk assessment for legionella is important and, in this module, you will learn the process of conducting a risk assessment for your building. You will understand how to document your findings and identify control measures that you should put in place.

Controlling the Risks – In the final module of our training you will learn how to implement controls that were identified in your risk assessment. You will explore the role of the duty holder, why training and development is important and the purpose of the written schedule to effectively control risk.
