Working in our commercial salon, you will learn a wide range of industry-standard treatments, developing your customer and business awareness.
Units include:
shampoo and conditioning hair
customer service
effective teamwork
blow-drying
facial skin care.
Our salons are open to the public, giving you valuable hands-on experience. Guest speakers visit to give demonstrations and you can add to your skills by completing short courses in specialist areas.
You will have the opportunity to visit exhibitions, training academies and product suppliers in the UK and overseas. You will be encouraged to enter competitions such as WorldSkills and our annual Hair & Beauty show, showcasing your work at regional and national levels.
Entry requirements
We would prefer maths and English qualifcations, however if in doubt, speak to our lecturers as this can be developed while studying the Level 1 qualification.
What attendance is required?
Your course is full time over one year for a minimum of 16 hours per week. A minimum of 90% attendance which includes maths and English classes must be achieved to ensure success on your course.
Our salons are run as commercial businesses to improve your employability skills, so some sessions will run into the evenings.
How is the course assessed?
The course will consist of theory, practical, portfolio, tutorial and additional learning to enhance your qualification. Throughout the programme you will be assessed regularly against the standards set down by the examining body.
Once you have completed the practical assessment of a unit to the set standard, you will sit your written assessment paper. You will be given assignments throughout the programme with lots of help and guidance.
What does this course lead on to?
You can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing or Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, or progress on to an apprenticeship.

This Classic Bridal hair up course will focus on traditional and classic bridal hairstyles. You will learn 4 key bridal styles including, rolls, knots, buns and the application of hair ornamentation that will capture the magic of every bride’s fairy-tale dreams.
Our course is designed for those looking to improve their hair styling skills. If you’re looking for a career in the hair and makeup industry, this course is for you. You can develop professional and technical expertise and build your confidence.
This programme offers an introduction to the hairdressing industry and the basic skills needed to assist in a salon. During your time at college you will have the opportunity to work in our modern, well equipped, hairdressing salons learning the skills needed for the Level 1 qualification.
Example timetable, Students will attend 2 days per week to work towards their VTCT qualification, 1-2 days at a salon placement that ALD will help find and also on a Friday at our hub in Birtley to work towards maths, English, IAG and enrichment.
