What is the Level 3 Award in Education and Training?

The Award in Education and Training is intended for those who require an introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification which can be undertaken by individuals who are not yet in a teaching/training role, or for those who are currently teaching/training. For example, this could be in a private training provider, the uniformed services, the workplace, or in community organisations and the voluntary sector.

Our four-day AET programme is accredited by TQUK, following their Level 3 Award in Education and Training - Qualification Specification.

The qualification is suitable for:

  • individuals not yet in a teaching role

  • individuals in a teaching role, or who have just started a teaching role

  • individuals who want a qualification without a minimum teaching practice requirement

  • individuals who may have already achieved some Learning and Development units that can be brought forward into this teaching qualification

Modules / Programme of Study:

The AET programme is comprised of two mandatory core modules and one optional module (12 credits).

  • Module One: Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

  • Module Two: Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training

  • Module Three (a): Understanding assessment in education and training
    or

  • Module Three (b): Understanding the principles and practices of assessment (this module is also part of the Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment, Award in Assessing Vocationally Certificate in Related Achievement and Assessing Vocational Achievement)

Teaching Practice (Micro-Teach)

The qualification requires learners to be involved in 1 hour of teaching practice. This will include a minimum of 20 minutes of teaching and a minimum of 40 minutes observation and feedback to peer learners.

Learners can deliver a one-to-one training session, providing that they meet the requirements of the qualification.

Assessment

Assessment will take place via an online portfolio of evidence, including long answer questions, teaching practice observation and evidence of teaching knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Entry Requirements

Learners must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • 19 years of age and above

  • Able to demonstrate an ability to study at level 3

  • There are no specific entry requirements and learners do not need to have teaching practice hours to commence the qualification.

  • Do not have a criminal background which prevents them from working as a teacher/trainer with young people or vulnerable adults. There may be a requirement by the employer for learners to be checked by the disclosure and barring service. The learner is responsible for seeking advice from their employer regarding this.

Successful learners can progress to other continuous professional development such as:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

  • Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement

  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
