The Course in Detail
This course provides a mixture of both core and specialist knowledge over a two-year period. Students will be expected to carry out extensive work experience (750 hours) to develop their skills and knowledge. Students will get involved in our Teddy Tots sessions and use our outdoor classroom as part of their course.
High standards of attire are a strict requirement during your course and will include a set college uniform. Text books relating to your course will be essential for your learning.
Learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working or be on a practical placement in a learning environment (early years setting) during the taught programme of study, and therefore will also require a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Initially students learn the core knowledge for the Education and Childcare sector. This includes consideration of the following 12 aspects:
Wider context of education and childcare
Child development
Supporting education
Safeguarding
Managing behaviour
Use of observation and assessment
Equality and diversity
Special educational needs and disability
English as an additional language
Working with parents, families and carers
Working with others
Reflective practice.
The core elements are assessed through an Employer Set Project and an externally marked exam. Combined this will be graded A*-U.
In year two there are specialisms that can be followed. The specialist content ensures students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve competence in this area. Students will be assessed by synoptic assessments and observations carried out while on their work placements. These elements combined will be graded Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded.

This includes showing competence of the knowledge and skills of following performance outcomes:

This specialism is full and relevant for childcare ratios.
