Overview
The travel and tourism industry is the 5th largest industry in the World and the UK’s 3rd largest export industry. The importance of the tourism industry to the UK economy has recently been highlighted during the Covid Pandemic.
People are desperate to travel, business travellers need to start moving and we want nothing more than to visit a festival, our favourite restaurant or a tourist attraction. Therefore, business analysts are confident the tourism industry will return bigger and better than before.
Tourism is much more than travel agents and cabin crew; the industry offers a wealth of career opportunities in management, marketing, finance, events, travel (airline, cruise and rail), hospitality, heritage and tourist attractions. There are numerous opportunities available locally, nationally and of course Internationally – if you want to see the world.
We offer an advanced qualification that is highly recognised by the tourism industry and will help you develop crucial practical and academic skills. We work closely with tourism employers to plan our course and assessments; as well as providing a varied guest speaker and trip programme, so you can get the most out of your college experience.
Tourism Management at Runshaw College is a fantastic course. Our students are trained in outstanding customer services and communication skills, have knowledge of business and marketing operations; can work both independently and as part of a team.
Students will complete a number of written and practical projects, to continually develop these skills and prepare for employment, higher level apprenticeships or university.
In keeping with developing a real industry feel, students will complete an Industry placement in the travel and tourism industry. Our students have worked in travel agencies, airports, airlines, visitor attractions and hotels including the Hilton. We also have close links with local event providers and many of our student’s secure part time work from their placements.
To enhance success even further. We have exciting enrichment opportunities for students including an extremely popular European visit, as well as an extensive day visit programme; which helps to give a real flavour of the industry.
Entry Requirements
For our Advanced Vocational courses our entry requirements are a minimum of 5x GCSEs at Grade 4, Maths or English Language or Literature at Grade 4 and Grade 3 in the others.
Some courses and subjects will have additional specific entry requirements or require DBS clearance to undertake placements. Information about this can be found on the Apply Portal, and on your offer letter which you will receive after your interview.
Students must have an interest in working within the travel and tourism area as opposed to simply enjoying travelling on holiday or wanting to live or work aboard. A positive attitude and friendly nature (customer service) is essential in the travel and tourism industry. Students will need to display this and develop confidence through the course.
Educational trips are essential to expand students’ understanding of the industry. An initial payment will need to be paid at the beginning of your course for mandatory activities.

History
Runshaw College was established in 1974. It initially began life catering solely for school leavers from Balshaw’s High School in Leyland, and Parklands High School in Chorley.
In the early years of its existence, the college gained a reputation for high-quality education and expanded at a gentle rate. Our students at Runshaw College always perform outstandingly well in their advanced level qualifications and that is certainly the case for Runshaw’s highly talented Class of 2023. Over 1000 A*/A grades were achieved by our A Level students. Overall, 95% of our Vocational students progressed to their chosen university.
Since 1974, six College Principals have worked incredibly hard to make Runshaw the success that it is.
The 1990s saw the college expand rapidly, as it undertook an extensive building programme (naming each new building after a place in the Lake District, the most recent of which is Buttermere – a nod to the trees and wildlife that make the campus so attractive) to accommodate increasing student numbers, as its reputation for high calibre teaching and strong exam results spread beyond the borders of South Ribble and Chorley.
It was during this phase, under the nationally recognised leadership of Principal Bernard O’Connell (who was later knighted for his services to education and to the college) that the college started to recruit in large numbers from surrounding towns of Blackburn, Wigan and Preston.
After the millennium, the college’s results went from strength to strength, and it achieved: Investors in People Awards, Grade 1 inspections and superb links with the country’s top universities, allowing the college to consistently have more than strong progression to the country’s elite universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
Today, Runshaw College has consolidated the previous 49 years of hard work and is now acknowledged as one of the finest providers of Further Education in the sector, attracting students from all around the North West now including Southport, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton and Wigan.
