The level 4 and 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a nationally recognised qualification for those individuals who aspire to hold a teaching role within an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities.

level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) and the level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is equivalent to the first two years of University Level study according to the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF) I.e. Foundation degree, Higher National Diploma.

The Level 5 DET is a recognised qualification which is designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers within an educational setting. Learners who successfully complete this qualification will gain further knowledge on aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, students will learn about theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

Who is it for?

The level 4 and 5 Diploma in Education and Training is ideal for those who wish to teach in Primary, Secondary or Further Education, depending on what Top-up degree you pursue following this course.

Teaching & Observations

Students are required to have access to a placement or teaching role where they work with real-life learners in order to satisfy the 120 teaching hours, as well as 10 observations.

The level 4 and 5 Diploma in Education and Training will help you develop the skills needed to understand the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, plan to meet the needs of learners in education and training, deliver education and training, and use resources for education and training. Students need to source their own placement to fulfil this. They should have a placement secured upon application.

During your observed teaching sessions, you will be assessed based on specific criteria from the units you are studying that you need to demonstrate competency in and evidence in your portfolio. The evidences you provide will be cross-referenced to the unit specifications and will contribute to your holistic assessment.

  • Eligibility to apply for relevant Top-up Degrees at a range of Universities and Further Education Institutions*.

  • You may then choose to follow up with an application for Qualified Teaching and Learning Skills status (QTLS) or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Study Mode:

For full-time study, we expect students to commit to 34 hours of study a week, whereas with the part-time study option, you need to commit to at least 17 hours.

Study comprises the following:

  • Attending lessons (1 or 2 lessons a week).

  • Completing your teaching hours and observations (120 hours of placement, 10 hours of observed teaching).

  • Partaking in Continuous Professional Development (CPDs) (minimum 30 hours).

  • Independent reading and research.

  • Completing assignments using a variety of assessment methods.

  • Attending 1-to-1 support sessions for additional help and progress checks.
