At WADPA we have lyrical classes from grade 1 level (age 7ish) up to senior level. We encourage all our students to take exams if they wish to.
Lyrical dance is a style that combines ballet and jazz dancing techniques. It is performed to music with lyrics so that it inspires the expression of strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics of the song.
Its similarity to ballet comes from combining the many technical elements of classical ballet dance with the freedom, expressiveness and fluidity aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance. Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through dancing. Students use long flowing skirts to help portray these emotions when dancing.
As the only dance school in Whangarei with a purpose-built fully furbished dance studio, WADPA has everything located under one roof. Our fully qualified and registered staff teach Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Acrobatic, and Contemporary Dance.
We teach age and developmentally appropriate Ballet, Tap, and Jazz dance technique classes from a syllabus that allows younger students more time for movement exploration while providing advanced students with the tools to become professional dancers.
Lyrical is defined by movements that are choreographed to the lyrics of a song, is often more emotional and portrays a story or feeling through dance.
Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet, jazz, and contemporary.
Our jazz/lyrical pre-school classes introduce dancers to flowing movements and encourage flexibility.

This is a question asked more often than anything else when you talk about contemporary & Lyrical....what is the difference? The truth is its very subjective, I believe that Lyrical follows the classical technique with the added contemporary technique but contemporary is all grounded.Â
