Session 1- Getting to know your sewing machine, taking you through the basics of setting up and working a sewing machine. You will practice setting up your machine and using different stitches and feet, finishing off by making a small tote bag with button closure.
Session 2- In this session we will further explore the uses of our sewing machines to practice what was learnt in the first session and to add to it. We will look at how to make a pair of tab top curtains and finish off by making an envelope cushion cover with optional piping.
Session 3- In this session we will look at dressmaking and how we can use the machine skills we have learnt to make items of clothing. I will go through how to use patterns, the markings on patterns and what they mean and take a look at a pattern from each of the 'Big 4' (Simplicity, Burda, Vogue and Butterick) so you can get an idea how each work.
I will also go though some independent pattern makers that are available and the advantages/disadvantages of using them over the big 3. We will look at the different methods for cutting out fabric using patterns and how you would go about selecting fabrics to use with different patterns. You will also have an opportunity to have a brief look at working an overlocker and have a go yourself using one.
Session 4- In this session we will go over everything we have done in the last sessions and have an opportunity to carry on with projects started in the last sessions or start a new one using the knowledge gained with guidance from myself.
Having started sewing at a young age, in 2016 I decided to combine my sewing skills with my love of all things Jane Austen to open my Etsy store to make and sell clothes from the era.
Since then my online shop and confidence in my skills has gone from strength to strength. I hope to help pass on my skills and love of sewing to others by opening Stitch and Stitchability.
