Mandarin Chinese Language

An ongoing course in Chinese language and culture for students with some background in the subject. Some use is made of a textbook and workbooks. A print or electronic dictionary is necessary. The class does not observe school holidays.

Chinese is the language used by over a billion people worldwide. At UNSW, you can learn Chinese with introductory courses or develop your skills in a language that has a rich cultural heritage and paramount importance in global business and international relations.

The movement of people and ideas, as well as economic, cultural and educational exchange, adds to the richness and complexity of this relationship. Chinese has been taught in Australian schools since the 1950s, and experienced rapid growth in the 1980s as China undertook a policy of open-door.

Is learning the most widely spoken language in the world on your bucket list. One in six people in the world speak Mandarin and the language has taken its place on the international stage as the language of business, economics and politics, ahead of English and Spanish.

We aim to help students at all levels reach their Mandarin language goals. Beginner courses start with basic spoken phrases for daily communication, while intermediate and advanced courses cover listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our students are of all ages.
