The programs are governed by the general regulations in effect for graduate studies of the University of Ottawa. The joint doctoral program is governed by the regulations and procedures for Joint Graduate Programs and the general regulations of the graduate faculty at each of the two universities.

The Department of Economics offers a Master of arts and a PhD in Economics. The Master of arts program includes a co-op option and the PhD program is offered jointly with Carleton University.

The joint doctoral is offered by the departments of economics at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.
The PhD program offers specialization for intensive study and thesis research in:

  • After successful completion of two compulsory courses, 6 elective course units may be taken outside the Department, subject to the Graduate Officer's approval.
  • The candidate must write a major paper (MRP 6999) devoted to an empirical research or to a critical assessment of a theoretical question or a public policy issue under the supervision of a full-time member of the Department. The research paper will be evaluated by another professor appointed by the Department Chairperson.
