Course Details

This course provides its graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to explain and apply appropriate information technology (IT) methodologies to help an individual or organisation achieve its goals and objectives. 
You'll also learn to appreciate the scientific foundations on which IT is built, and to anticipate the changing direction of IT and evaluate and communicate the effectiveness of new technologies.

The Master of IT offers two specialisations to provide in-depth knowledge of cutting-edge topics in machine learning, natural language processing, cloud computing, the internet of things and high-performance computing.

About the course

  • This course has a strong emphasis on the application of contemporary and emerging technologies, including cloud and high-performance computing, agile web development and software project design and management.
  • You'll develop computer programs in a number of contemporary scripting and programming languages and apply logical and critical thinking skills to harness existing technologies to manage and analyse large data sets.
  • You'll also be introduced to other fundamental pillars of information technology (IT), including network and web-based systems and their security, and human-computer interaction.
  • The course is presented by members of UWA's big data and optimisation research groups, and includes guest lectures from industry. You'll participate in a group design project providing you with an opportunity to apply your knowledge to a real-world design challenge.

You'll learn to

  • Gain the knowledge and skills to anticipate the changing direction of IT.
  • Understand the application of contemporary and emerging technologies, including cloud and high-performance computing, agile web development and software project design and management. 
  • Gain skills in critical thinking, communication skills, ethical computing, working with and in industry.

Conversion

Students who have completed degree studies in a non-cognate area, or equivalent as recognised by the School, must complete relevant conversion units up to the value of 24 points as determined by the School upon offer of admission and by the scope of a student's prior study. Students choose either CITS2002 or CITS2005.
