Course Details

The Master of Radiology Program is a full time 4 years medical specialist training programme in radiology. This programme received full accreditation by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) and is recognized by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). 

It provides candidates with the opportunity to qualify as a radiologist.  The training is conducted at accredited Department of Radiology, KPJ Specialist hospitals. The programme provides an innovative competency-based training program featuring one -to-one, hands-on apprenticeship, supervised by a group of dedicated and experienced KPJ Radiology consultants. 

Although the majority of training will be conducted at KPJ Specialist Hospitals, candidates will have opportunities to attend academic programmes and clinical training at Department of Radiology, UPM Teaching Hospital, other private hospitals and Ministry of Health hospitals, especially for subspecialty training not available in KPJ Specialist Hospital.

Career Opportunity

After completion of Master of Medicine (Radiology) KPJU, candidates will undergo pre-NSR attachment  for 2 years and an additional 1 year at accredited KPJ Specialist Hospitals. The candidate also has the option to apply for gazettement at any accredited centre under Ministry of Health or Ministry of Higher Education.

  • Radiologist in Public Universities/Government sector.

Course Summary

  • This is a full-time, 4 years clinical training programme in radiology.
  • All candidates accepted into this programme will be appointed as Registrars (trainee Medical Officer) at one of the KPJ Specialist Hospital (the base hospital) throughout the course. Registrars will receive a monthly RM 5,000 cost-of-living allowance from the hospital. Besides undergoing training, registrars have to participate in the clinical, research and quality assurance activities at the Department of Radiology of the base hospital.
  • During the 4 years training, candidates undergo a 3 to 6 monthly rotation at accredited KPJ Specialist Hospitals. At each hospital, candidate will perform clinical duties as a registrar at the Department of Radiology, supervised by a senior radiology consultant. The hallmark of this training programme is “one-to-one” apprenticeship training, where each candidate will perform clinical duties with a senior radiology consultant at the department. The consultant provides close supervision and immediate feedback to candidates. Candidates will also be posted to undergo clinical training in short durations at Department of Radiology, UKM Medical Centre, UPM Teaching Hospital, other private hospitals and Ministry of Health hospitals, especially for subspecialty training not available in KPJ Specialist Hospital.
  • Candidates are also required to conduct research and the research-work must be submitted as a dissertation 6 months before the final examination. Candidates will sit for the Part 1, Part 2 and the final Part 3 examination, conducted by National Conjoint Board of Radiology. After passing the final examination and fulfil all the training requirements, candidates will be awarded Master of Radiology KPJ Healthcare University College.

Phase I: Year 1

  • Learn the basic theory of Radiological Anatomy ,Radiological Medical Physics (including radiation hazards and protection), Radiographic Techniques, Radiological Equipment and Apparatus, Radiological Procedures, Contrast Media, Radioisotope, Related Drugs used in radiology, Basic Trauma Radiology, Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Radiology and  any other Radiology related topics.
  • Undergo practical training in various modalities in radiology.
  • As for exposure to nuclear medicine, candidates are posted to Beacon and Pantai Bangsar Hospitals.

Phase II: Year 2 and Year 3

  • Training in all aspects of diagnostic radiology, imaging techniques and interventional radiology.
  • Learning the theory of clinical radiology by anatomical system.
  • Continuing practical tasks as clinical radiology apprentice.
  • As for exposure to nuclear medicine, candidates are posted to Beacon and Pantai Bangsar Hospitals.
  • Studying research methodology, good practical biostatics methods and medical ethics.
  • Candidates are required to attend short courses in Research Methodology, Biostatistics and Good Clinical Practice.
  • Conducting a research project.
  • Candidates will also prepare and conduct research project leading to a submission of a dissertation.

Phase III: Year 4

  • Serves as a future  radiologist in training.
  • Advanced training in all aspects of diagnostic radiology, imaging techniques and interventional radiology.
  • Prepare and present the report of dissertation initiated in Year 2.
  • Participate in the management and relevant legislation and quality assurance in radiology.

Examination

  • All the Professional examinations are conducted by the National Radiology Conjoint Board, comprising of all the IPTAs and IPTs in Malaysia, which are currently offering the Master of Medicine

(Radiology) Programme. 

  • Therefore, all candidates will sit for common Professional examinations for the Master of Medicine (Radiology) in Malaysia.  Candidates are required to pass the Part I Examination of the Master of Medicine (Radiology) by the end of Phase I (Year 1).

Format of Part I Examination:

To follow as specified by the National Conjoint Board (Radiology), comprising of:

  • MCQ
  • OSCE & OSPE
  • Viva-voce

At the end of Phase II (Year 3), candidates will have to sit for Part II Examination of the Master of Medicine (Radiology).
