This short programme provides delegates with the required knowledge, tools and understanding to develop the key skills of mentoring.  It is suitable for first time mentors looking to build their mentoring ability. 

However it is also useful if you have more experience and want to improve your mentoring skills, developing your own unique mentoring style.

  • Identify the knowledge, skills, and attributes of Mentors, and assess yourself against these.

  • Ethics and safeguarding in mentoring

  • A framework for drawing up a mentoring agreement / contract

  • Communication skills in mentoring

  • Structuring mentoring meetings

  • Structuring mentoring conversations

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will have the skills to:

  • Explain mentoring, and the key knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to be an effective mentor.

  • Demonstrate key aspects of the mentor / mentee relationship including putting in place a contract aligned to ethics and showing consideration to safeguarding issues.

  • Use effective communication, and mentoring frameworks having applied this knowledge to review a scenario video and demonstrated these in a practice activity.

  • Identify methods of engaging with a mentee including being able to use a range of mentoring tools.

  • Demonstrate the ability to give and receive feedback effectively, through participating in a practice activity.

  • Reflect on their role will as a mentor, identifying personal strengths and development areas, by producing a personal SWOT analysis and development plan.
