Sewing is a life skill that has faded away with other hands on classes in schools. Empower your kids with the practical know how of hand stitching, sewing buttons on, mending and hemming. After completing this class, kids and teens will feel empowered to create their own designs.

We have a skill building philosophy so that kids have what it takes to imagine, plan and create. Home Room is where creativity meets practical skills to build confidence, a sense of accomplishment and pride in a job well done.

Description:

Materials: Fabric and Notions List will be provided 2 weeks before class begins, however we have all the tools and notions. Kids do like their own sewing kits.

This is a 4 week hand sewing course for clever, craft loving kids. We cover all the information and skills (I promise, it’s not boring) to get you up and running. Once you build your skills and gain confidence, your creative ideas will begin to flow. You’ll suddenly realize, ‘Hey! I can make that!’.

This 4 week class is hands on learning. We’ll cover the basics, and a little more to give you the confidence you need to continue sewing. Hand sewing is one of the most calming, confidence-building handcrafts.

I highly recommend it for all kids. It comes in handy in practical ways, but also empowers kids to know they can make something fabulous with their own two hands, a needle and thread and some fabric.

Week 1:

Intro to tools, notions and hand sewing buttons. Not all sewing is machine sewing, so we teach you practical hand sewing skills you’ll use throughout your life. It’s quite calming to hand sew and it will provide a foundation for machine sewing. You’ll learn two different button installations and will get to create textile art with buttons and vintage fabric scraps.

Week 2:

Rips, tares and patches. You’ll learn how to mend seams, jeans, and apply patches. You’ll learn how to do visible mending (Boro and Sashiko stitching). These mends are so trendy right now, your friends might want you to customize their old jeans. In fact, if you get good, you could start your own little boutique visible mending business. (See Crafty Kids Entrepreneurial Academy). We’ll also learn the right way to hand stitch patches onto apparel.

Week 3:

This week is all about practical–learn how to hem up that skirt, or pants. You won’t want to be taping or stapling an undone hem in place before an event. With a few basics, you can whip up that hem so that it’s better than new. You’ll need to bring in some item of clothing that needs hemmed. We can also take out a hem and sew it back up again. NO KNITS.

Week 4:

Now you know hand stitching basics. This week you’ll get to choose what you want to do. You can make a hand stitched pouch for a gift, create textile art with your new found stitching skills, work on visible mending/embellishing your favorite jeans, or just sit and enjoy the calming activity of hand stitching while talking with your new sewing friends.
