Course Details

Singapore is one of the leading chemical hubs in the world, with over 100 global chemical firms having major operations here. According to the government’s Energy & Chemicals Industry Transformation Map, this industry is expected to grow and generate $12.7 billion in value-addedness.

About 1,400 new jobs will be created by 2025 through the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies particularly in the key areas of petrochemicals and specialty chemicals.

Furthermore, the chemical industry in the ASEAN region, China and India, will continue to grow at a real rate of 1–3%. The advanced chemistry sector relating to novel materials, biomedical and biotechnology will likely enjoy even stronger growth. Therefore, there will be sustained robust demand for a Master degree rooted in the fundamental chemical sciences in both the local and wider regional markets.

This programme is designed for chemistry graduates who would like to pursue a postgraduate degree in Chemistry. This programme lays the scientific foundation in chemistry for attendees for senior positions in the chemistry industry as well as to qualify for other advanced degree programmes such as Ph.D. in Chemistry.

At the end of the programme, the student will be equipped with advanced knowledge and skills pertaining to recent developments in the Chemical Science which will enable him/her to perform with confidence leading roles as scientists, managers and entrepreneurs in Chemistry R&D and related industries.

 

Application Requirements

For admission as a candidate for the degree of MSc in Chemical Sciences,

  • a person must have completed a degree in Chemistry, or related subject with at least a 2nd Class Honours, or its equivalent.

  • Applicants whose native tongue and medium of university instruction is not completely in English should upload the official score sheet of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as evidence of their proficiency in the English language. The minimum TOEFL score required is 85. The minimum IELTS score required is 6 (overall).

  • Candidates with other qualifications and achievements deemed to be suitably prepared for the programme of study may also be considered.

 

Graduation Requirements

  • To qualify for the degree of MSc (Chemical Sciences), the candidate must successfully complete a programme of study consisting of at least 40 units, which consists of the following:

    • 20 units from the core courses

    • 20 units from the elective courses. While Graduate Certificates are optional, the candidate may be able to obtain up to two GCs from the pool of elective courses.

  • In addition, a student must obtain a minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.00 (B-) for the best courses equivalent to 40 units, inclusive of 20 units from the core courses.

  • Students may repeat courses (with fees) to improve their GPA provided the maximum candidature is not yet exceeded and as per conditions imposed by the Department/Faculty.

 

Period of Candidature

  • For the full-time programme, the minimum period of candidature will be 12 months and the maximum period of candidature will be 24 months from the date of the candidate’s first admission to the course.

  • For the part-time programme, the minimum period of candidature will be 24 months and the maximum period of candidature will be 48 months from the date of the candidate’s first admission to the course.

 

Continuation of Candidature

For continuation of candidature, a student must obtain satisfactory progress during his/her candidature.

  1. Academic warnings will be issued to students if GPA < 3.00; and

  2. Dismissal and refuse readmission will be issued to students if: GPA < 2.50 for two consecutive semesters of study; or GPA< 3.00 for three consecutive semesters of study.
