If you want to prepare for a career in the sport and leisure industry, particularly in a community role, then this is the qualification for you.
This programme is run in partnership with Reading Football Club Community Trust, where students will be able to undertake an exciting work experience placement during their studies.
Aims and objectives
This qualification aims to:
give you the introductory skills and knowledge you need to start a career in sport and progress within your employment in the sector
gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions
prepare you for higher- or further- education, or onto the Level 3 Sport qualifications, through full-time or part-time study
choose a pathway and units that reflect your career or academic aspirations
What you'll learn
To be awarded the Level 2 Diploma in Sport (Sports Coaching), you will be required to successfully complete three mandatory units (below) and four optional units, which you will be able to choose. The compulsory units are:
Participating in sport (6 credits)
Sports coaching (6 credits)
Developing sporting skills and tactical awareness (6 credits)
To achieve the Level 2 Certificate and Diploma in Sport, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the units as detailed in this qualification specification.
Essential skills
These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem solving, to more tricky-to-measure skills such as:
an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress
appropriate interpersonal skills
communicating with professional colleagues/peers and/or hierarchical seniors
supporting other aspiring employees
personal manners and deportment
understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation
How you'll learn and be assessed
This qualification consists of 42 credits. You will study six, core units and four optional units. The range of optional units will enable you to focus on a particular strand of learning and interest whilst the mandatory units provide a good introduction to support progress into the workplace or further study.
You will have a work experience placement with Reading Football Club. The work experience element is key to providing opportunities to enthuse you and allow you to experience working in a community role within a professional sport club or sport and leisure industry environment.

You need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Language and Maths
