Real-world experiences you will love
Right from the start, you’ll be learning about the logistics of great service both to the customers at your tables, and to the team of chef’s you’re supporting.
Located on the Nelson campus, the Rata Room will give you a first glimpse of what it’s like to be a part of a popular café and restaurant service by the end of the year.
We’ll make sure you learn how to problem-solve and calmly work through everyday hospitality situations so you can confidently go to work in the industry, and, will ensure you also have the opportunity to get out and enjoy some work experience.

English language requirements
All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo M?ori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.
International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years

If you have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage (Level 3) (Café Services) (Bar Services), or equivalent, or have six months experience as a Food and Beverage Attendant and wish to consolidate your qualification then this is the programme for you.
This programme will give you the knowledge and skills you need to provide service in cafés and unlicensed restaurants. You’ll learn about food preparation and service, gain barista skills and gain skills in kitchen health and safety and customer service.
You will learn how to interact with colleagues and customers and provide memorable, high-quality dining experiences while gaining first-hand experience on how to monitor and maintain customer service, policies and procedures.
The aim of this programme is to prepare graduates with advanced knowledge, skills and understanding of food and beverage service and provide competent employees who are able to work as food servers in the restaurant services sector.
The New Zealand Certificate in Food & Beverage Level 4, Barista, Wine & Spirits will develop practical skills to enhance your career opportunities, learn about the world of wine and spirits and build pathways to more senior restaurant and hospitality management roles.
