The NOCN Level 3 Award in Phlebotomy is a regulated qualification that is ideal for those looking to start a career in healthcare who wish to add to their skill set. This regulated qualification follows the Skills for Health principles.

This course is suitable for learners who are interested in becoming a phlebotomist and may not already work in the health sector or a related area. This course will introduce learners to the theory underpinning the practice of phlebotomy and allow you to apply this knowledge with practical skills and taking blood from a dummy arm.

What's covered

The units included in this course have been developed to align with the CH132 National Occupational Standard for Obtaining Venous Blood Samples. This is inline with NHS guidelines.

Day 1

Unit 1: Understanding Phlebotomy Skills and Techniques

Day 1 mainly covers the theory of phlebotomy including:

• Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations

• Principes of Informed Consent

• Principles of Infection Control During Venepuncture

• Science and Anatomy Behind Venepuncture

• How to Select an Appropriate Vein

• Different Types of Consumables required

Day 2

Unit 2: Caring for Patients during the Phlebotomy Procedure

Day 2 mainly covers the practical elements including:

• How to Take Blood from a Dummy Arm

• Preparing and Packing Samples for Transportation

• Effective Communication

• Complications of venepuncture

• Caring for patients
