Operations management is concerned with the management of resources for producing and delivering products or services. Case study material will be used in the module to illustrate many of the important issues faced by operations managers as well as covering the core operations management techniques.

  • Apply techniques and approaches of operations management to solve practical operations management problems;
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the advantage and disadvantage of different techniques and approaches of operations management.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Problem solve on location issues, scheduling;
  • Critically analyse and evaluate on operations performance and strategy, supply network design, process redesign;
  • Develop teamwork on practical cases of operations management;
  • Develop written and oral communication skills through in class group discussion and case report writing;
  • Computer skills on suitable software to solve operations question.

  • Strategic role and objectives of Operations Management.
  • Forecasting and long-term capacity management.
  • Production planning and control.
  • Inventory management.
  • Supply Chain Management (SCM).
  • Lean operations.
  • Quality planning and control.
  • Project management.

Teaching and learning methods

  • The module consists of two lectures per week for 12 weeks and a total of 10 classes including computer workshops. Classes are in the form of small-group tutorials and will include group exercises, presentations, discussion of case studies, problem sheets.
