Practising your skills in studios, darkrooms and Mac suites, you will become knowledgeable in camera skills, location techniques and pre and post-production.
Throughout your studies you are encouraged to showcase your work through renowned photography competitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards and BBC My Pictures.
Previous students have enjoyed trips to New York, Berlin, Barcelona and Krakow to understand photography composition and location techniques.
To help you master your skills you can loan the latest Nikon camera body and lenses from our dedicated equipment store.
Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English or maths and an art-based subject.
You will also meet the teaching team to present and talk through your portfolio of photography work.
What will I achieve?
This is a two-year programme. You will achieve a qualification after successful completion of each year.
In year one you will receive a Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma Art and Design (Photography).
In year two you will receive a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma Art and Design (Photography).

Work experience opportunities
Work experience opportunities are included throughout this photography course and you will benefit from talks with The Smiths Photography, Laura Hetherington (animal portraiture) and Jeff Brown (Marketing for Photographers).
As a Newcastle College photography student you will also collaborate with fellow students, supporting with photography of music performances and stage shows.
Where can I progress?
On successful completion you can progress to BA (Hons) Photography with Newcastle College University Centre.
You may also wish to find employment as a photographer's assistant or pursue freelance photography work.
English and Maths
Photographers need a good understanding of maths when working with image resolutions, light calculations, f/stops and photo editing. English skills are essential when analysing images, writing about the work of others and drafting sketchbook narratives.
