Course Description
Physical Education is a great subject to study at A Level for those that are interested in the world of sport. We look at the body in detail through two physiology units, looking at topics covering areas such as the respiratory system, sports injuries, and biomechanics/movement analysis. There are also topics such as aggression in sport and equal opportunities that look into the wider role sport plays in society.
Entry Requirements
If a student is applying for a course in a subject that they have studied at GCSE it is expected that they would have achieved at least a standard pass (grade 4) in that subject.
Students are required to play regularly and compete in a sport whilst studying their A Level.
Course Content
Paper 1 – Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport
During this unit the emphasis is placed upon learning the basics of skill acquisition, anatomy and physiology, and ways in which a performer can train in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Students will look in more detail at the ways in which exercise impacts upon the circulatory and respiratory systems as well as ways in which a performer can learn new skills. The unit will also look at the socio-cultural issues within sport.
Paper 2 – Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport
There are three key components to this unit –exercise physiology and biomechanics, sports psychology and sport, society and technology. These three aspects are taught separately and make up the final examination in this subject.
All of the work done relates these three very different areas back to sport and sports performances, and can be intriguing and beneficial to sportspeople of all standards.
Non-exam assessment – Practical performance in physical activity and sport
Students are assessed as a performer or coach in the full-sided version of one activity. Therefore it is imperative that the student is actively taking part in a fully competitive version of their chosen physical activity. They will also have to produce a written/verbal analysis and evaluation of their performance.
Assessment
Paper 1
Written external examination: 2 hours, 105 marks.
This examination accounts for 35% of the overall A Level grade.
Paper 2
Written external examination: 2 hours, 105 marks.
This examination accounts for 35% of the overall A Level grade.
Practical performance
90 marks.
Students are internally assessed on their performance and written/verbal analysis of their performance by members of the PE department, and are externally moderated. This equates to 30% of the A Level grade.
Future Opportunities
The subjects students learn about will be invaluable at a personal level and will help them to be better at sport, no matter what the individual standard. This A Level also opens up a whole number of career options, for example as a PE teacher, sports coach, personal trainer, sports scientist, physiotherapist, nutritionist, or jobs within sports development.
Our mission
The mission of Elliott Hudson College is to create a culture of excellence in which all thrive. All members of our community understand that a culture of excellence is achieved by each person trying to be, and do, a bit better today than they did yesterday. By adopting this mindset over a prolonged period of time, all within our community can achieve excellence but also create a culture that encourages excellence in others.
Our beliefs
Our fundamental belief is that all students can be successful in their programme of study
providing they:
are taught well every day in a well designed and implemented curriculum; and
are provided with the support and guidance to develop the habits for successful academic study.
This is why we structure all of our work and curriculum through the Elliott Education and Hudson Heart.
Our values
Our experience tells us that where students embody our core values, they – and the wider college community – are more likely to thrive and be more successful.
Our mission, beliefs and values embody our college spirit and ethos. They are used to guide the actions and decisions that we all make each day. They allow us all to make mistakes, but more importantly, learn from our mistakes so that, over time, we can realise our potential in playing a purposeful and active role within our local, national and global community.

Our curriculum develops the knowledge, skills and habits that young people need to contribute the wider local, national and international community and economy, now and in the future.
However, the curriculum at EHC, and progression route that our students take post-18, support many of local identified skills needs:
Our curriculum offers: vocational courses in Health and Social Care, IT and Applied Science; well subscribed A-Level courses in all Sciences, Computer Science, Media Studies, Film Studies, PE, Economics and has between 50-75 students each year enrolled on Further Mathematics.
