Course Structure
Before You Start
You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.
Course Content
In year 1 you will develop an understanding of anatomy, skill acquisition and sport in society. You will also start your written coursework where you will be required to analyse and evaluate a defending and tactical skill from the syllabus. In year 2 you will deepen your knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology and technology in sport.
You will also submit your practical video evidence (demonstrating attacking, defending and strategic / tactical skills) from fully competitive situations. This is a predominantly theoretical course, but practical sessions are used where relevant to highlight key learning opportunities.
Although high-level competitive performance is not essential, your athletic ability will influence your final grade as you will be assessed as a performer in your main sport from the approved AQA list.

Future careers might include PE teaching, lecturing, sports management, coaching, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, sports nutrition, sports psychology, sports journalism, sports analysis, sports therapy, strength and conditioning or personal training, Students may consider direct entry into other employment or further training.
Higher Education
This course is excellent preparation for students planning to continue on to university to study any sport science, physical education or sport-related degree.
Last year students went on to various destinations including university places at Swansea, Oxford Brookes, Bath, Hull, Gloucester, Nottingham Trent, Coventry, Bournemouth, Bath, Worcester, Loughborough, Lincoln, Brunel, Portsmouth, Winchester, Exeter, Birmingham and Brunel University.

Our primary postgraduate routes are School-Based Initial Teacher Training routes to Qualified Teacher Status, with or without a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (awarded in conjunction with Birmingham City University).

T-Levels are new courses which follow on from GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A-Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares you for work, further training or study.
Our PGCE with QTS (Employed Route) enables trainee teachers to gain Qualified Teacher Status while in employment in schools in England.
