Course Details

The police leadership programme is a five-stage development programme being delivered as part of the National Centre for Police Leadership (NCPL). It's for everyone who works or volunteers in policing. Each stage aims to deliver a consistent standard of leadership development throughout your career – whether you want to broaden and develop your skills or prepare for promotion.

Stage one

  • Leadership standards – for constables and staff with similar levels of responsibility
  • Leadership programme – foundations of leadership for those who have not joined through a policing education qualifications framework (PEQF) entry route

Stage two

  • Leadership standards – for sergeants and staff with similar levels of responsibility
  • Leadership programme – for first-line leaders and those aspiring to progress to this stage, including constables and staff 

Stage three

  • Leadership standards – for inspectors, chief inspectors, and staff with similar levels of responsibility
  • Leadership programme – for mid-level leaders and those aspiring to progress to this stage, including sergeants and staff  

Stage four

  • Leadership standards – for superintendents, chief superintendents, and staff with similar levels of responsibility
  • Leadership programme – for senior leaders and those aspiring to progress to this stage, including chief inspectors and staff 

Stage five

  • Leadership standards – for chief officers and staff with similar levels of responsibility
  • Leadership programme – for executive leaders and those aspiring to progress to this stage, including superintendents, chief superintendents and staff
