Fashion Design is the art of the application of design and aesthetics to clothing and accessories. The art and business of fashion give form and function to clothing, a basic human need, imbuing it with meaning in the ever-evolving language of fashion and style. Fashion designers study fashion trends, sketch designs of clothing and accessories, select colours and fabrics and oversee the final production of their designs.
Fashion designers attempt to design clothes that are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear, fall within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions.
During the beginning of the course, the students will be introduced to the basic art and drawing principles, basics of textiles, basics of pattern grading, cutting and stitching techniques. At the advanced level, the students will learn about fashion illustration, fabric and colour, clothing construction, communication skills, marketing and merchandising, textile designing, accessory designing and draping. They are taught the techniques in the dyeing of fabrics, weaving and printing technology.
Class assignments and projects form a part of the curriculum. An internship programme in a boutique, designer store or retail store is mandatory in the 2nd year and a garment manufacturing company in the final year of the study. An annual designer show is organized every year for the students which are judged by the top industry professionals where versatility, creativity and innovation are encouraged.
