This Presentation Skills course is helpful for anyone who has to present to colleagues and other stakeholders, and wishes to improve their skills.

As a result of attending the course, delegates will be able to:

  • deliver a confident professional presentation

  • use effective visual aids

  • effectively get their message across

  • deal with questions confidently

  • see themselves on film in order to improve technique and boost confidence

The course is also useful for those who dread standing up in front of an audience as it will teach them the skills they need to deliver confident presentations, in a practical, safe environment. In short, this presentation course is for anyone who finds delivering presentations challenging or nerve-wracking and wants that to change.

Programme

The programme commences with introductions and objectives for the day, then takes a step by step approach:

Step 1 – Examining our Fears

  • what is the fear?

  • how likely is it to happen?

Step 2 – Structuring the Talk

  • identifying the main elements and sub-elements of the topic

  • gathering the support material

  • checking the flow

  • memory aids and pre-presentation checklist

Step 3 – Starting to Speak

  • relax muscles and use your voice

  • establish eye contact

  • occupying hands

  • using positive and avoiding negative body language

Step 4 – Preparing the Presentation

  • define the purpose

  • know your audience

  • establish your right to speak

Step 5 – Variation in Speaking

  • holding the listener’s attention

  • the importance of delivery:
    -non-verbal communication
    -tone of voice
    -the use of words

Step 6 – The Use of Visual Aids

  • ‘use and abuse’

  • use of blank slides

  • visuals that ‘add value’

  • Film: ‘Can We Please Have That The Right Way Round’

  • room layout of seats and equipment

Step 7 – Dealing with Questions

  • how to deal with difficult questions and control a question session

  • encouraging feedback

Step 8 – Presentations Practice – Preparation of short presentation followed by delivery and feedback.

Step 9 – Action Session – Course members will be asked to identify the practical actions they will take as a result of attending the course.
