Course Details

The Private Pilot License allows its holder to fly as pilot or co-pilot of an airplane for personal purposes. This is the most commonly held license in Canada and is the first one earned by the aspiring professional pilot.

Only day flying of a single engine non-high-performance airplane in accordance with Visual Flying Rules (VFR) is allowed with the PPL, unless other ratings have been earned.

Although a pilot with this license cannot work for hire, reimbursement for some costs is permitted.The following endorsements can be added:

  • Seaplane rating
  • Multi-engine rating
  • Night rating
  • VFR-Over-the-Top rating
  • Group 1 Instrument rating (Multi-engine)
  • Group 3 Instrument rating (Single engine)

Prerequisites

  • 16 years of age to solo
  • 17 years to obtain the Private Pilot License
  • Successful completion of category 3 or 1 Medical Exam
  • Successful completion of the PSTAR and Radio exam

Transport Canada Requirements

  • 45 hours total flying time
  • 17 hours dual (with instructor), including 3 hours-cross country and 5 hours instrument flying
  • 12 hours of solo, including 5 hours cross country
  • A 150 nautical miles cross country trip with 2 landings at 2 different airports
  • 40 hours of ground school
  • Completion of a Transport Canada PPL written exam
  • Completion of a Transport Canada PPL practical flight test
