Public Speaking & Presentation Skills
Asked to rank their greatest fears, a group of college students put death at number seven and speaking before a group as number one!
This course discusses the role of 'nerves' or fear and the part they play in inhibiting our performance in front of a group of people. It does not aim to eliminate entirely the stress involved - as Lord Mancroft once commented 'Without nerves nobody ever made a good speech.' The aim of the course is to seek to reduce such nerves to a manageable level and take advantage of those positive aspects of being keyed up that help us to perform even better than usual.
The course covers key tips and techniques not only on improving performance and delivery but also on how to (and when to) inter-act with an audience. These tips include how to cope with 'drying up' and with awkward or difficult audiences but points out that in the vast majority of cases the audience is actually wanting us to perform well. By the end of the day participants will have learned, in a non-threatening environment, the real secrets behind a good and effective presentation.
Who are we?
The Liverpool Empowerment Centre, based in Rodney Street, Liverpool, is a combined therapy and training centre, specialising in counselling training, psychotherapy and counselling. It caters for clients and students throughout North West England.
More about us
The Centre was formed by Jo Edwards, a qualified and experienced psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, lecturer, and coach who has practised in Rodney Street for fifteen years. The Centre provides a range of personal therapies, clinics, workshops and accredited training.
Each of the practitioners is qualified and experienced in their range of therapies and where appropriate have clinical supervision and CPD (Continuing Professional Development).
All clients are initially assessed before a contract is agreed. The contract outlines the time, place, cost and likely duration of future sessions. The therapist will explain about the rules of confidentiality. Confidentiality is, of course, an integral part of the therapeutic relationship and all counselling and psychotherapy in general.
At the Liverpool Empowerment Centre all our therapists not only have the relevant qualifications and experience but also public liability insurance and where appropriate CRB checks (Criminal Records Bureau) and membership of an appropriate body whose ethical guidelines are followed such as the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and UKCP (the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy). All adhere to their professional body's code of ethics including the requirement to have continuing professional development.
Early 2011 saw the commencement of accredited counselling courses and places for future courses can be applied for at any time. (These courses were taught by Jo Edwards at the Liverpool Community College for fourteen years but the College has ceased to hold them.)
These courses include Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Concepts, Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills and Level 4 Diploma in the Theory and Practice of Counselling.
These are accredited by ABC Awards. Early in 2014 the Centre will commence three further courses - Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory, Level 5 Counselling in Independent Practice, and Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision - accredited by CPCAB.
Delivering effective presentations is a common activity that nearly everyone at work has to do in today’s business environment. There’s something about speaking in front of others that terrifies some people and excites others.
Develop the confidence and communication skills to convey your message effectively and with impact to small groups or large audiences.
Public speaking is often rated as one of the biggest fears people have, so knowing how to handle that fear and still present yourself professionally is a great skill to have.
Presenting to groups of people either face-to-face or virtually on-line can be nerve racking for even the most experienced of presenters. Getting your message across in a succinct and impactful way takes careful preparation and requires a variety of communications techniques.
Whatever business you are in, the majority of people who give presentations have never had any training.
