Chemical processing, oil and gas industries that fall under the category of Major Hazard Installations (MHIs) involve a variety of hazards that stem from the nature of the process itself or even the peril of the substances and products.
Hence, it is vital to fully understand their hazards and measure the risks accurately in order to prevent major hazard accidents such as fire, explosion and toxic release. In Malaysia, the quantification of risk is a regulatory requirement in the CIMAH 1996 regulations.
The QRA is conducted to measure the likelihood and consequences of hazardous events and expressing the results quantitatively as a risk to people, assets, environment and businesses.
The QRA analyse complex consequences, i.e. the possible flammable, explosive or/and toxic effects, from discharges/releases of liquids and/or vapours, by taking into account the local population and weather conditions, in order to quantify the associated risk. In QRA, a large variety of complexities can be found, from simple and deterministic to very extensive and stochastic.
Therefore, this 3-day course intends to introduce concept, methods and tools needed to conduct risk assessment for new, operational and expansion of major hazard installations. This course will provide the theory and hands-on training related to quantitative risk assessment for conformance to regulations and assurance of safer industrial environment.
Currently, SAFETI (Software for the Assessment of Flammable, Explosive and Toxic Impact) developed by DNV-GL is the user-friendly industrial standard software for carrying out quantitative risk analyses of onshore process, chemical and petrochemical facilities or analysis of chemical transport risk.
This tool can be used to measure risk contour, FN curve and ranking of risk contributors. It is also a major decision support tool for organisational strategic planning, facility siting and layout, and for detailed risk and safety assessments. The participants will get the opportunity to practice risk-informed decision-making and risk management.
