Asbestos removal license holders are often required in the construction industry. In Melbourne and the rest of Victoria, licensed asbestos removalists may receive one of two types of asbestos removal licenses – Class A or Class B.

A Class B license is needed for the removal of non-friable asbestos. Non-friable materials are less likely to release harmful fibres into the air compared to friable materials. Examples of non-friable materials include cement siding, floor tiles, false ceiling panels.

A Class A license is needed for the removal of friable asbestos, which includes products that are easily crushed or pulverized. Examples of friable materials include asbestos insulation and pipe coverings.

Asbestos cement sheeting can become friable, depending on its conditions. Severely worn cement sheeting may break easily, which releases more asbestos fibres into the environment.

The state government can issue an asbestos removal license to a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU). Workers who carry out asbestos removal work on behalf of a PCBU must complete an accredited training course, such as CPCCDE3014 REMOVE NON-FRIABLE ASBESTOS (CLASS B)
