This three day course is designed for personnel who are required to be Qualified Riggers/Signalpersons. A Qualified Rigger must be used for any hoisting activity for crane assembly and disassembly work and anytime workers are within the fall zone and hooking, unhooking, guiding a load, or completing the initial connection of a load to a component or structure.
A Qualified Signalperson is required when the crane operator does not have a full view of the point of operation, the operator's view is obstructed in the direction the equipment is moving, the operator or the person handling the load feels a signalperson is needed, or anytime there are site-specific safety concerns.
This course can also benefit supervisory personnel who oversee crane operations and lifts. Topics include: hazard recognition, evaluation, and control; construction exposures and applications; detailed review of OSHA, ASME, and ANSI regulations and requirements; proper rigging principles and techniques; knots; tagline use; working load limits, mathematical calculations, and sling angles and load angle factors; sling selection and usage; wire rope and chain design; rigging inspection, pre- and post-use inspection, proper rigging hardware inspection, and hook inspection and use; conditions and causes for removal; wedge sockets; types of hitches and hitch strengths; rigging component identification and sling identification; rigging guide and chart interpretation and manufacturer's recommendations; crane characteristics and dynamics; signal person requirements; working near power lines; and hand signals and voice communication.
Training includes active participation with hands-on activities and demonstrations.
For a limited time, our OSHA training courses will also be available as instructor-led live webcasts. UTA Trainers are permitted to register and take the OSHA Trainer Update Classes offered as live webcasts regardless of location. Participants must live or work within OSHA Region VI (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas).
