Rigging is the process used in securing materials to be moved by cranes, hoists and various other lifting equipment. When securing a load with slings or chains, there are many factors to be considered including the working load limit of the hoisting equipment, the weight of the load and rigging equipment, and the capacity of the hoist. Rigging is a vital part of any work site where materials or heavy equipment needs to be relocated in a safe and efficient manner.
A rigger’s main duties are to inspect, maintain and install rigging equipment in a safe and compliant way. It is vital that workers involved in rigging activities are trained in both the safety and operating procedures as most accidents occur due to the lack of training of the rigger. Identifying hazards in the workplace is the first step to reducing potential accidents.
