  • General introduction to the primary legislative requirements, Approved Codes of Practice and official guidance for risk assessment

  • Why risk assessment is needed, and consequences for not implementing and monitoring assessments

  • The key five steps for risk assessments

    • Where to start?

    • Practical risk assessment workshop

  • Identifying areas and processes that need to be assessed

  • Hazard identification 

  • Considering past experience / accident history when determining risk level. Use of matrices to help determine risk

  • Considering existing control measures and the extent to which they eliminate / manage risk

  • Considering further controls and timescales (that are reasonably practicable) 

  • Risk assessments in practice (delegates assess a task/ area of their choice)

    • (Practical exercise)

  • Feedback

  • Further risk assessment practice (delegates undertake assessments of their own work area) Techniques for reviewing assessments
