The courses contain a variety of interactive learning activities which cater for all levels of knowledge. There are online tasks and worksheets which students need to submit weekly for marking. Regular weekly Zoom or telephone lessons are also an integral part of the course.
During these one-on-one lessons, students will develop their speaking skills and have the opportunity to discuss any queries about the coursework with their teacher.
Face-to-face lesson days are also organised for students to meet and interact with their peers at NSW School of Languages. All the learning materials for these courses are available in the e-learning class. It is not necessary to purchase additional resources.
There are 32 modules to complete each year, ranging in topics from hobbies and interests, special celebrations, entertainment, daily life, weekend activities, food and drink, holidays and travel etc.
Russian Continuers
This course is designed for students who have studied Russian in Years 9 and 10 or for those who have prior or background knowledge of Russian.
The course provides a flexible blended learning approach. Ample practice is provided for students to develop their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills through a number of diverse exercises and activities.
The three prescribed themes are the focus of the course:
Each theme has a number of prescribed topics, for example: personal identity, education, leisure, lifestyles, visiting Russia, arts and entertainment, environmental issues, world of work, social issues.
All the materials for learning are available in the e-learning class. It is not necessary to purchase additional texts or resources.
In the Year 11 Preliminary course there are 15 units set for study. Each unit in the course clearly states what work the students are required to submit to their teacher for marking.
Weekly Zoom or telephone lessons with their teacher allows for speaking practice as well as opportunities to further discuss the course work.
In the Year 12 HSC course there are 20 units to complete over the four school terms. Additional enrichment and extension materials as well as links to Russian language learning sites are also available for all students in the e-learning class.
This course focuses not only on the HSC syllabus topics but also heavily on HSC examination skills and techniques.
Face-to-face lesson days each term and some cultural events at the NSW School of Languages provide the students with the opportunity to have an informal language exchange with their peers and to seek further assistance and support.

Student learning is supported through a diverse program of online learning materials, speaking lessons, video conferencing, online forums, email and study days at our school where students enjoy the opportunity to meet with other students and staff.
The use of the telephone and video conferencing ensure that students have close connections with their teachers, despite the fact that they are not in the same physical space. Our students are drawn from over 460 schools across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and other rural regions across New South Wales.
The school also offers Stage 6 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) to students in regional government secondary schools. In the 2020 Higher School Certificate (HSC), 69% of our students achieved results above the state mean and NSW School of Languages students achieved First in State in 11 courses. Fifty-five students were placed in High Achievers List, earning marks placing them in top 5 in the state.
Of the 820 HSC students, 65% of students achieved a mark in the top two bands. Of the students studying an Extension course, 96% of students achieved in the top 2 bands.
The school has written new courses in Canvas for Year 9, 10, Year 11 and 12 Beginners and Extension students. These courses represent the latest pedagogy in online learning. Teachers will continue participating in professional learning on language pedagogy, assessment, and working with students with special needs.
Teachers at NSW School of Languages are experts in their language. More than half of the staff assist the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to mark the HSC each year with a significant number involved in the setting or assessment of the examinations.

Regular Russian Classes Regular Russian evening language courses are conducted in four 10-week terms per year. We have classes from beginner to advanced levels. Each class has one 90-minute session per week unless indicated otherwise.
