Incorrect manual handling is one of the most common causes of injury at work. It causes work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) which account for over a third of all workplace injuries.
Employers must comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002.
These regulations apply manual handling activities involving transporting of loads, including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving loads. A load maybe either inanimate, such as a box or a trolly, or animate, for example an animal or a person. The risks from manual handling can be found across all kinds of workplaces - in factories, care homes, schools, farms, offices and building sites.
