This training skill will enable participants to safely and effectively use a self-contained breathing apparatus during normal occupational assignments and emergency operations. 

The learner will possess the fundamental knowledge and skills to ensure that respiratory protection is not intentionally compromised and hazardous areas are exited prior to air depletion.

 

Curriculum:

 

  • Physiology Of Respiration
    • Functions of normal human respiration with reference to the flow of air through the respiratory tract.    
    • Functions of normal human respiration with reference to the flow of air through the respiratory tract.    
    • Physiological signs of reduced oxygen in the atmosphere.    
  • Explain The Nature And Characteristics Of Common Hazardous Atmospheres
    • Common hazardous atmospheres    
    • Conditions occurring in each of these hazardous atmospheres    
    • Most common gases found during fires    
  • Limitations Of A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
    • Limitations of the equipment of a self-contained breathing apparatus.    
    • Impact on the wearer's performance    
    • The limitations of the air supply in a self-contained breathing apparatus.  
  • Components Of A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus And Their Functions
    • Open and closed circuit types.    
    • Functions of all components of a self-contained breathing apparatus in the context of emergency services operations.    
    • The flow of air through a self-contained breathing apparatus, with reference to the consequences of correct or incorrect usage.    
  • Maintaining A Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus In A State Of Readiness
    • Routine inspection of a self-contained breathing apparatus    
    • Carrying out a service test for maintenance of a self-contained breathing apparatus    
    • Completing inspection and test documentation in line with organisational requirements    
  • Don And Doff A Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Safely And Efficiently
    • Donning preparations    
    • Donning self-contained breathing apparatus within the required time frame    
    • Performing appropriate pre-entry checks, including checking of relevant functions in line with standard operating procedures    
    • Procedures in ensuring self-contained breathing apparatus is returned in operational state of readiness or removed from service, depending on its effectiveness    
  • Working In An Area Of Obscured Visibility While Wearing A Self-Contained Breathing
    • Gaining safe entry in line with standard operating procedures    
    • Following procedures for safe movement, taking into consideration the need to maintain orientation    
    • Maintaining work team safety    
    • Exiting hazardous work area timeously, before air is depleted    
  • Course Notes
    • Learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the physiology of respiration, nature/ characteristics of common hazardous atmospheres, limitations, components and functions of SCBAs. Learners should also be able inspect and maintain a self-contained breathing apparatus in a state of readiness as well as don and doff SCBAs safely and efficiently.
