Serbian is a South Slavic language and is the official language of Serbia. Serbian is currently written with both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, which are both officially recognised, although Cyrillic was made the official script of Serbia’s government in 2006.

Literate Serbians are able to read and write their language in both scripts, and media organisations typically choose to use one or the other. After World War II, the former Yugoslavia was the third largest source of migration to Australia from continental Europe, after Italy and Greece.

There were four principal periods of migration: the period leading up to World War II; 1948-54; 1960s, 1970s and post 1991. The Census in 2011 recorded more than 20,000 Serbiaborn people in Australia, an increase of 17 per cent from the 2006 Census.

The main languages spoken at home by Serbia-born people in Australia in 2011 were Serbian, English and Hungarian. There are significant numbers of Serbian speakers in the United States of America, Canada, France and New Zealand as well as in Australia.
