You will learn the following:
A quick safety lesson
The "anatomy" of a sewing machine and its useful parts Sewing basics: pins, needles, thread, cutting tools, the importance of pressing/ironing
How to thread sewing machine
How to wind a bobbin and load it
How to change stitch length, stitch width, and stitch style, and when to use them
How to sew straight stitches
How to gauge seam allowance
Hacks to make your time at the sewing machine easy

In this workshop, we'll discuss basic mending techniques and materials. We'll look at lots of examples and help you come up with a plan for your own visible mend. Please bring with you a piece of clothing or textile that needs to be mended so you can get started with us!
Sewing techniques include: installing zippers, hemming pants, pockets, Hong Kong seams, how to sew a sleeve (set a sleeve) using different textiles, and much more!
Join us in-person to make pillowcases for veterans that are part of the Road Home Program at Rush Hospital. The Road Home is dedicated to the mental health and wellness of veterans, service members, members of the National Guard, reservists and families.
In the Children’s Sewing Class, beginning and intermediate students will learn how to use their machine, take measurements , lay out and cut fabric, read a pattern, understand the pattern directions, finish seams and learn sewing techniques. Students will advance at their own pace.
