Sewing machine operators work in the clothing and textile industry. They typically do not need any special education to do this job, and they typically don’t require much secondary education. However, a lot of employers want people with experience operating a sewing machine, and operator training is available.

Generally, the duties of a sewing machine operator include setting up their own machine, as well as any related equipment like peripherals and tools. The tools typically available to sewing machine operators are fasteners, knives, scissors, templates, measuring devices, and stiffeners.

They are also responsible for monitoring their machine and inspecting the clothing after it has been made. Typically, sewing machine operators work in a large room with other sewing machine operators at large tables or individual desks, with supervisors in the room in case anything happens.

They do not have any interaction with clients. The entire job is fairly physical with small amounts of mental work involved, such as remembering patterns of cloth and how to put together clothing.
